Creating a wallet takes a couple of minutes. The most important part: writing down your recovery phrase — the only way to recover your funds if you lose your device. {% stepper %} {% step %} ### Choose Create New Wallet On a fresh install, tap `Create New Wallet` after setting your PIN. (Adding another wallet later? Not sure? This name is only visible to you. For Monero, you can also pick the seed type — `Polyseed (16 words)` is the default — and the recovery phrase language. Under `Advanced Settings` you can add an optional BIP39 passphrase. {% hint style="warning" %} A passphrase is an advanced feature: it creates a completely different wallet, and a lost passphrase cannot be recovered — not even with your recovery phrase. {% endhint %} {% hint style="info" %} Want one recovery phrase to back wallets for several currencies? Choose the `BIP39` seed type — only BIP39 wallets can join a [wallet group](https://docs.cakewallet.com/features/managing-your-wallet/wallet-groups). Monero's default Polyseed cannot. {% endhint %} ![Naming a new Monero wallet with seed type options](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/cake-tech/docs-assets/main/v6.4.5/getstarted_create-new-wallet_07_name-wallet_hl-1.png) {% endstep %} {% step %} ### Acknowledge the warnings, then write down your recovery phrase Before revealing anything, Cake Wallet shows a `Your Secret Recovery Phrase` screen with three statements you must read and tick: * that the recovery phrase is the ONLY way to recover the assets in this wallet, * that you will write it down and store it somewhere safe outside the app, * that you will never show or share it, because your funds can and will be stolen. Once all three are ticked, tap `Show me my Recovery Phrase`, then write the words down — on paper or in a password manager — in order. {% hint style="danger" %} NEVER share your recovery phrase with anyone, and never type it into a website. Anyone who has it can take your funds. Cake Wallet support will never ask for it. {% endhint %} {% hint style="warning" %} This screen also offers `Skip this step`. Skipping creates the wallet without ever showing you the recovery phrase, and Cake Wallet asks you to confirm before it does. Cake Wallet asks you to confirm two of your words (for example, "What is the 9th word of your Recovery Phrase?").
